What is your position at LA?
Director of College Counseling
I do all the scheduling, help with curriculum and staff.
I work downstairs in the office on Tueday and Thursday.
I am the webmaster on our website.
Founder of the school.
How many years have you worked at LA?
15 years- since 1994.
What is your birthdate?
November 9
Tell us about your family.
I am married to Glenn and have 2 children. Courtney is 24 and was in the first graduating class in 2002. Ryland is 17 and a junior at LA. People often see me with my mom and my aunt who are both deaf. I have an older sister and 2 brothers. Avie Collins is my niece, a senior at LA.
Pets:
Our 13 year old cat, Bobby. Two dogs: Blue and Chrissy.
Education:
I graduated from USC-Spartanburg in 1978 with my degree in Education. I have also taken classes at Erskine, PC, USC, Furman and Lander.
Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Laurens, moved to Carson, California when I was five. I moved back to SC when I graduated from high school.
What is your favorite book?
I really don't have a favorite. I have many fond memories of the books I read as a child: Nancy Drew Mysteries and biographies.
What is your favorite song?
How Great Thou Art, sung by Elvis Presley.
What is your favorite movie?
Several: Notting Hill, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, Gone with the Wind, and all the Jane Austen movies based on her books, like Pride and Prejudice.
What is your favorite Bible verse?
I think my favorites change as my life experiences change. A couple of my favorites are connected to the school;
Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.
(Proverbs 22:6) That verse has always inspired me to keep going and know that we are doing good things here at LA for God's children. The verse reminds me that our children may not appreciate now what we've tried to share with them, but they will know later. The other verse is Luke 5:26:
Everyone was gripped with great wonder and awe, and they praised God, exclaiming,"We have seen amazing things today!"
I pray that when people look at Laurens Academy they will be so amazed at what God has done here that they will stop and praise Him!
What are your hobbies?
Right now I really enjoy working on the website. I love baseball, especially Ry's games and I love watching the College World Series.
What is your favorite part about working at LA?
I love the kids and I love being around other Christians.
What is something that most people may not know about you?
I used to work on Channel 7 on the 7:25 AM morning news as the interpeter for the deaf in the little box in the bottom of the TV screen back in 1977/78 while I was in college. I made $7.50 a week to work 5 minutes each morning.
