 Library News

Have you "checked out" the new library?

Sunday, August 24, 2008    By Emily Brown
The new school year brought Laurens Academy many new changes and improvements. One of the most beneficial changes to the school was the renovation of the Library.

The computer lab was moved upstairs, creating much more room for the library, itself, to expand. The extra space came at just the right time. Laurens Academy had 500 books donated from a Christian school that closed down, as well as about 700 other books that needed to be added to the library!

In addition to new books and space in the library, there is something else new called The College Corner. The College Corner is located on the back wall of the library and has information on more than 25 state and private schools. More and more information is coming in to the school every day, the College Corner is filled with brochures from the schools, lists of majors and other areas of academics, posters, and ways to visit the colleges.

There are also resources for SAT/ACT and financial aid. The College Corner is now an easily accessible place to find information to help students decide on their future! Although the computer lab is now upstairs, there will still be about eight computers in the library for research and ARP testing.

The library doesn't just have resources for the students, though. There is a teacher resource shelf behind the copiers with information for all the teachers. Also, the Young Readers' corner is also a great addition to the library. The Young Readers' corner is for the K4-2nd grade classes and is a comfortable area in the library for them to read their books. Mrs. Finley, says, "Students are already enjoying the openness, friendliness, colorful decorations, and the laid-back environment where everyone feels comfortable studying and reading."

Thank you to everyone who worked hard making the library into what it is now!

Our Librarian

Mrs. Finley is the new librarian. This is her first year at Laurens Academy and she has re-created the library into a fun and laid back environment to read and study. She says that her favorite part about working at Laurens Academy is the students. Mrs. Finley says, "Students are already enjoying the openness, friendliness, colorful decorations, and the laid-back environment where everyone feels comfortable studying and reading!" We are so happy to have Mrs. Finley joining us at Laurens Academy this year.

Book Fair- A Huge Success

Monday, November 17, 2008    By Emily Brown
The Book Fair this year was a huge success! The total sales were $3,236, a 114% increase over last year. We received almost $400 in FREE books for our library and we also got to keep $752 in profits to use for further improvements and additions. Third grade won $30 in books for the highest sales average, per student. Second grade won $20 and fist grade won $10. Congratulations and thank you to all who participated in the Book Fair and helped our Library!

Sara Spoone-Library Helper

Sara Spoone

This summer, while visiting the library, you would have found a huge project in progress. The new librarian, Mrs. Finley, started very early on transforming the library into what it is now. All of the projects included moving all the computers out and taking apart the computer lab. Also, many more shelves were put in to fit the thousands of books that were added to the library. Fourth grader, Sara Spoone spent many hours and days in the library with her parents and Mrs. Finley, moving computers and box after box of books. She said, "I enjoyed spending my summer here. It was great to see what a huge difference had taken place after only two months of working. It was fun to see everyone's reaction to the new library when school started and knowing that I had helped that happen!" Mrs. Finley was also very grateful for the help. "Sara Spoone was a huge help in the summer transformation of our LA Library! She earned many service hours by shelving and moving books. Sara cleaned and dusted many late evenings with me. She has a terrific attitude and is much appreciated." If you haven't already, be sure to stop in to the library and see how all the hard work and commitment paid off!
